Busy Caring For Everyone Else? 15 Quick & Easy Self Care Activities for You

What does it say about our culture that talking about having no time for ourselves is not a crisis, but a cliche? Thanks to modern technology, we are indeed trapped inside the parameters of more than a few cliches. For example, how easily can you relate to the concept of being so busy caring for everyone else, that you lack the time or energy to help yourself?

The best way to kick this cliche to the curb is to pick a single self-care activity and make it happen. How we each define self-care will, of course, vary, but here are 15 quick and easy choices to build momentum.

  1. Compliments list. Every time someone gives you a compliment, write it down. With a pen, on paper. Get yourself a journal for this sole purpose, give it a cool name, and keep track of what others love about you! Undoubtedly, there will be a times when browsing that journal is the best form of self-love.
  1. Buy a foam roller and use it daily. This simple method of physical therapy will help you work out the kinks from head to toe. Once you’ve learned the proper, safe form, to do this activity, you and your roller will definitely become best friends.
  1. Take yourself on a date. Ask yourself out. Say “yes.” Make plans. Follow-through.
  1. No alarm day. As often as possible, allow yourself to wake up naturally. Opening your eyes when you’re ready instead of when a loud noise forces you is bliss.
  1. Be a tourist in your own city. Whether you just take a different route to work or you go all out and visit the popular nearby tourist sites, give your brain a vacation!
  1. Play air guitar. Turn on your favorite rock song, grab a broomstick or tennis racket, and re-connect with your inner Van Halen.
  1. Examine your social media friends list. Not all “friends” are created equal. Unfortunately, we all have a few people around who add nothing but stress to our online life. There’s a reason they created an “un-friend” function.
  1. Write each day’s headline. Just before you hit the sack, look back over your day and ask yourself: What is today’s headline? What’s my personal top story? You might even want to keep a journal of these headlines and give it a read on New Year’s Eve.
  1. Read a (real) book. Start this step with a trip to the library. Once you have a real book in your hands, stay away from your computer and instead, turn some pages and enjoy.
  1. Become a photographer. Thanks to smart phones and free online editing sites, it’s never been easier to take quality photos.
  1. Donate, sell, recycle. Whether you’re a pack rat or a minimalist, there will be stuff around your home that would be of better use elsewhere. Clear some physical space and stretch out!
  1. Walk more and turn off your phone while walking. Most Americans drive everywhere even if “everywhere” is just a few minutes away. Challenge yourself to walk more. And while you’re at it, challenge yourself to put your phone away so you can appreciate your surroundings.
  1. Set boundaries and enforce them. This is a trickier one, but it may have amazing long term benefits. Meditate on the literal and figurative spaces that  you feel are crowded, ignored, or imposed upon. Take measures to safely and carefully explore ways to secure your boundaries.
  1. Challenge a long-held belief. Nothing makes a mind happier than entertaining new ideas.
