Why Doesn’t Meditation Work for Me?

You’ve heard about all of the benefits of meditation. People that you follow on social media and even some of your friends, family members, and a few of your co-workers rave about it.

You’ve tried it before, but you just don’t seem to appreciate it as much as everyone else does. You’re starting to wonder if you’ve really tried it before though.

Did you try hard enough? Are you even doing it right? How do you actually meditate? Do you need to try harder next step?

Let’s learn more about why meditation may not be working for you.

Your Thoughts Are Consuming You

When you meditate, you’re supposed to sit, relax, and clear your mind. From the outside looking in, meditation may seem like a breeze. It isn’t that easy for everyone though. The world is filled with distractions.

This can make it even harder to tune out those distractions and focus on the present moment and inward towards yourself. Meditating takes a lot of time and practice, but it gets easier over time. Your thoughts will never go away completely, but you will get better with time.

You Have the Wrong Expectations

If you’re expecting a miracle, then meditating isn’t going to get you there. Meditating isn’t about solving all of your problems in life. It will help you clear your mind a bit so you can focus your efforts on finding solutions instead. Meditating is often associated with being enlightened because the process allows you to filter items out of your head that you don’t need to be focused on.

Meditating Doesn’t Mean Dissociating

If you’re looking for an escape or an out-of-body experience, you won’t find that through meditating. Meditation will actually do the complete opposite for you. The idea behind meditation is that your mind is freed up enough for you to become more aware and present on what’s going on in your daily life.

A lot of anxiety and worry stems from thinking about your past or worrying about things that haven’t even occurred yet in your future. Meditation is a great back to bring you back to the present moment.

You’re Not Meditating Enough

Even if you feel like you’re not actually meditating, you are. Getting started with meditation is the hardest part about it. The idea behind meditation is that it should be a daily activity that you practice. Meditating won’t come naturally to a lot of people.

When you want to get better at something, you practice. The same can be said about meditation. The more you incorporate it into your life, the easier it will get to complete it daily, push away those anxious thoughts and feel more grounded.

Next Steps

If you’re having a hard time meditating, you’re not alone. Meditation is something that requires time and practice. Give yourself a little grace and allow yourself to fall into a meditation routine naturally. Don’t force it.

In today’s world, it can be extremely hard to slow down those anxious worries and thoughts. That being said, it is possible. If you’re struggling with meditating on your own, help is available to you. There are several meditation apps that you can use to guide you through some starter meditations.

You can also seek additional support from a therapist. They’ll be able to work with you to find ways to better manage and cope with some of those negative thoughts that can have a negative impact on your daily life and routine.
